Fall Adopt-a-Road Event! Join us!

Hello Friends (and Park Neighbours)!

Autumn is upon us and that means it’s time to organize for the Fall edition of the Lanark County Adopt-a-Road program with the Friends of Murphys Point! Want to spend some time outside helping Murphys Point and keeping the neighbourhood beautiful? We are seeking volunteers to help pick up litter and recyclables along the stretch of County Road 21 (Lally Road) from just before the Park entrance to the Group Camping area. Our Spring pick-up was a great success!

The event is slated to take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, with a rain date of Sunday, Oct. 27. We do each side of the road, which is about 3.5 kilometres each way.

Park staff will be on hand to assist, and safety equipment will be available. Volunteers must sign a waiver for the County in order to participate. Please note, if you participated in the Spring, you don’t need to sign the waiver again – it remains valid for the duration of the program. Here is a link to the waiver: https://www.lanarkcounty.ca/en/roads-trails-and-transit/resources/Documents/Indemnity-Requirements.pdf

For your reference prior to signing the waiver, please have a look at the County agreement information (https://www.lanarkcounty.ca/en/roads-trails-and-transit/resources/Documents/Adopt-A-Road-Agreement-Form-Fillable.pdf) and the Terms and Conditions (https://www.lanarkcounty.ca/en/roads-trails-and-transit/resources/Documents/Adopt-A-Road-Terms-and-Conditions.pdf)

If you would like to help, please complete and return the waiver to us at friendsofmurphyspointpark@yahoo.ca by 4 p.m. on Oct. 24 so that we can forward it to the County. Volunteers will receive safety instructions prior to the pick up, including information about ticks. Equipment will be provided.

Please let us know if you would like to help out and we will provide more details about meet-up locations, etc. We’re excited to participate in the program and we hope you are, too!

General Membership Meeting Sept. 17

Hello Friends!

We hope you can join us for a brief online Special General Meeting of the Friends of Murphys Point membership on Sept. 17. This meeting is required to approve bylaw amendments mandated through the new Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA), which came into effect on October 19, 2021 and provided a deadline for not-for-profits such as ours to review and update our governing documents by Oct. 18, 2024. Your Board of Directors has completed the review and approved the amended bylaws, which must now be endorsed by our membership.

The special meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Members who have a current paid membership can vote at the general meeting. If you need to renew your membership, please visit our Membership page. Once received, we will forward the meeting package and Zoom link to you.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this important business, and we look forward to seeing you on Sept. 17!

Safe Travels, Monarch Butterflies!

As summer draws to a close, we are given a last look at some of the wonderful migratory species that inhabit Murphys Point for only a fleeting period of time, one of these being the Monarch Butterfly. It is important to appreciate these insects before they head for warmer climates.

After emerging from their chrysalis in late August, new monarch butterflies prepare to fly to central Mexico for the winter. At Murphys Point, the best place to see monarchs is the Lally Homestead, a habitat with an abundance of milkweed and other native wildflowers which provide food and shelter for larvae and adults alike. 🐛

Catch a glimpse of this beautiful butterfly before it begins a 3 000 kilometre journey, not to return until the following summer!
