Have We Got a Canoe for You!

Looking for an easy way to support the Friends that also offers a chance to win a great prize? Then be sure to get your hands on tickets for our annual canoe raffle!

This year’s gorgeous canoe has been generously donated by Scott Canoe. It’s a 16-foot Prospector weighing in at 67 pounds. It is fiberglass and finished with the satin Slimline aluminum trim package and features wood web seats, a standard ash yoke and wood frame. The outside finish is a nifty-looking two-tone: the upper half is yellow and the lower is ivory white. It also comes with two paddles and two PFDs.

See the canoe for yourself – it is on display at the Park Store all summer. You can get your tickets at the Store or the Gatehouse, and they are also on sale at special Friends events. They are $2 each or 3 for $5 – a real bargain for the chance to win a prize worth $1,300!

Proceeds from ticket sales support the Friends education programs. The draw will be held at the Main Beach at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4. Hurry – there are only 2,500 tickets to be sold!

Thanks in advance for your support!

Fabulous Beach BBQ Held!

Thanks to everyone who joined us on the beach at Murphys Point Park on Sunday, July 10 for a fabulous BBQ. The day was hot and sunny and there were lots of swimmers and canoeists working up an appetite. Friends’ members and volunteers Jane, Judy, Jan, Pat, Don and Beth were kept busy taking orders and serving up delicious burgers, sausages and hot dogs along with homemade cookies and chips for a special treat! We raised over $400 towards youth education programs run by the Friends at the park each year.

Friends member Don beat the heat while he cooked up a fabulous BBQ.

We were pleased to meet many campers from out of town. It was wonderful to chat with them about their stay at the park – many said they camp at Murphys Point every year! Of course we encouraged them to consider joining the Friends of Murphys Point as a member to further support all of the activities of the Friends. Memberships are now available on-line.

Favourite activities of the campers we met included trips to the Silver Queen Mine to learn about mica mining and the geology of the area, the amazing amphitheatre programs put on by park staff and, of course, spending time in or on the water – not surprising given the hot weather lately!

A young BBQ customer and his Dad have a conversation with Friends member Jane.
